Kinetic Sculpture Races

Jerry was looking for a conversion kit to make any bicycle into a watercraft.

I can't help with that, but it did remind me of the Kinetic Sculpture Races held in various places around the world. The oldest ongoing one (in its 35th year as of 2003) is held in the Eureka area in northern Northern California, and goes from Arcata to Ferndale. 38 miles of mostly human-powered motion, on pavement, sand, mud, and, yes, across Eureka Harbor. It is held every Memorial Day weekend.

Yellow Submarine "Race" is kind of a misnomer — the emphasis is on the art, and on having fun. E.g., they have rules that include things like each pilot must carry a toothbrush, and a stuffed toy. I attended the event twice, had a lot of fun both times. Visited Redwood National Park on one of those trips.

There are now similar "races" held in other places:

The granddaddy, though, is the Arcata to Ferndale one mentioned above.

Ellin Beltz has a good collection of links about Kinetic Sculpture Races.
