New feature on this blog: Today in History. An update every day with an event that happend on this date in history.

On December 17 1903, 100 years ago today, the Wright Brothers flew their historical first flight in Kitty Hawk North Carolina. On the fourth attempt of the day Wilbur Wright flew 259 meters in 59 seconds, leading the way for a century that would see flights across the Atlantic and trips to the moon.

It must however be noted that some other guys did fly first. And that the key achievement of the Wright Brothers was not being the first to achieve flight, but the invention of the pinciples of control (ailerons to control roll, elevators to control pitch and rudders to control yaw) which is still used on all modern aircraft.
