On this day in 1642 dutch explorer Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand. Tasman sailed from Jakara with two ships: the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen.He named his new discovery Staten Landt believing that New Zealand was connected to a piece of land just south of Argentina.
