2004 Presidential Transition
Here's a story about Attorney General John Ashcroft's resignation from the Denver Post [November 10, 2004, "Ashcroft leaving Bush's Cabinet"]. From the article, "Leading candidates to succeed Ashcroft include Alberto R. Gonzales, the White House counsel, and Marc Racicot, the chairman of Bush's re-election campaign. Larry D. Thompson, who served as deputy attorney general until last year and is now the general counsel of Pepsico in Purchase, N.Y., is a personal favorite of the president but is said not to be interested in the job, a Republican close to the White House said."
"Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, a close friend of Bush who spent years promoting the administration's tax cuts across the country, also submitted a letter of resignation Tuesday. Mercer Reynolds, a Cincinnati businessman who was Bush's campaign finance chairman, is a top candidate to replace Evans, the Republicans said."
Here's the coverage from the AP via the Rocky Mountain News [November 10, 2004, "Ashcroft, Evans resign from Bush Cabinet"].
TalkLeft: "I think Larry Thompson would be an excellent choice--the best of all the names that have been suggested so far--by miles. Is he conservative? Yes. But anyone Bush picks is going to be conservative. Most prosecutors are that way. Larry Thompson has been a defense attorney and when he was, he was as committed to his clients and their defense as any career defense attorney. I've known him since he was a defense attorney, and I am not the only defense attorney to have such a high opinion of him. He was a much admired and respected member of the defense organizations I belong to."
Andrew Sullivan is pointing to some math guys with too much time on their hands to analyze last week's election. The maps represent a very interesting look at the election results and echo John Perry Barlow's assertion that we're all in this together.
Lawrence Lessig: "The Exit Polls have done enough damage to this election. My bet is that it was incompetence at Edison/Mitofsky. But those firms owe it to this Nation to release their data totally, so that a wide range of competent statisticians can evaluate whether and where the problem was."
Update: From email from CNN: "President Bush announces White House counsel Alberto Gonzales is his choice to replace Attorney General John Ashcroft."
Update: TalkLeft: "Alberto Gonzales backgroud."
Update: Latinos voted 53% to 44% for John Kerry but the President increased his percentage by 9% over 2000, according to the Daily Kos citing data from the New Democrat Network.
