Michael Powell

Lawrence Lessig: "Michael Powell completes his fourth year as chair of the FCC in December, and his tenure has not been a quiet one. He oversaw one of the most ferocious public policy battles in FCC history - the fight over media concentration - and he did not hesitate to run the indecency flag up massive-fines hill, hitting CBS for $550,000 and Fox for $1.2 million. He is the FCC head liberals love to hate, and is, in their eyes, one of George W. Bush's first (of many) mistakes. But to this liberal, there's something important and rare in Powell's legacy that deserves our respect. For in at least two critical domains of FCC policy, he has let the facts push ideology aside."

Architecture Astronauts

Here's an interesting look at unnecessary complexity in software from Joel Spolsky. It's an old rant linked yesterday by Dave Winer.

Colorado Water

The Denver Post is reporting that snowpack is close to normal levels across Colorado so far this year [November 27, 2004, "Mountain snowpack piles toward average"]. From the article, "A wintry storm Friday dumped up to 10 inches of snow in parts of the high country, and more was expected over the weekend as Colorado's snowpack crept toward its historical average. The state's snowpack was at 91 percent of average, 3 percentage points behind where it was this time last year. Many of Colorado's ski resorts in the north-central mountains, including Steamboat, Winter Park and Aspen, received between 2 1/2 and 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Cameron Pass received between 8 and 10 inches of snow."

Here's the Colorado Snowpack graph from the National Resources Conservation Service.

Here's a snowfall table for you numbers junkies.
