Captain's Quarters: "The announcement yesterday of an arrest in March of a high-ranking Hezbollah terrorist in Iraq gives more credence to the accusations of Iranian involvement in Iraq's insurgencies. The US caught Ali Moussa Dadouk in southern Iraq after he masterminded a Karbala attack that killed five American soldiers -- and Dadouk fingered the Iranians for much more.
The Moderate Voice: "In another bloody milestone, 108 U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq in June -- the first time that there have been over 100 deaths for three consecutive months since the war began."
Juan Cole: "Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is calling for provincial elections to be held in Iraq by the fall of 2007. This step would be significant because Sunni Arabs boycotted the last round of provincial elections, in late January, 2005. As a result, Sunni Arab provincial officials in al-Anbar and Salahuddin provinces don't represent much of anyone. (In al-Anbar the turnout was 2%), or they are drawn from Shiite parties (as at Diyala). Having politicians in the Sunni Arab provinces that actually represent the population would be a potential first step to national reconciliation."
