Anthony Wilson has confirmed for the show this Thursday, February 21, 2002 from 6 to 7 pm PT. Jazz 88 can be heard at 88.3 FM in San Diego and via webcast at http://KSDS-FM.org/Listening. Right on! More news will be posted on The Anthony Wilson Weblog at The New Jazz Thing! Here's what I told him why I was excited to have him on the show. "I had been introduced to your Dad's music when I just started really listening to Jazz in the late 80's, when I started at Jazz 88. It fit right into an affinity I found for big band / large ensemble recordings...Basie, Duke, Mingus, Gil Evans...soulful and swinging and reaching for something different. And when your first disk came out AND you were writing / arranging for big band, it was great to hear what you were doing with all of that and much more. So...I'm excited to think about rapping about some of this and where you're headed. And what folks will hear on Saturday. Among other things."Yep, I'm excited. 11:01:10 PM ![]() |

Joe, proprietor of the Art Lung Blog and WebSanDiego.org, has added The New Jazz Thing to the list and introduced me to a home town community of bloggers. Can't wait to get down through that list and see what folks have to say. A nice looking list, Joe!
Wonder if Joe has heard the show? http://NewJazzThing.com/Live |
MAMA Music Room - Samples (RealAudio) of MAMA artists, about five per disc but lots of discs. Anthony Wilson, Gerald, others. You have to click on each 1 minute sample, individually. A pain. I want a playlist to click on to play all the samples. Well maybe we'll make one and share it. Or someone else could help. I could do it if it was an MP3 (MPU file). RealPlayer playlist file format? This could be fun for having others build their own playlists of tunes available on the Inet and sharing it with others. |
Fred Jung - My Conversation with Anthony Wilson - Well, I think I got started by virtue of the fact that I loved music so much when I was a kid, meaning like three years old, four years old. Music was filling my head. I would go around singing songs and kind of like a sponge absorbed a lot of things and then when I was old enough to take an instrument, the first one that came along was guitar. That was when I was about seven years old."
Here's the reading for the evening, at least on this New Thing. |

"I'm trying to let the songs create their own melodic world. I'm also trying to build interest into each player's part. If their part feels almost singable and not just a voice in a chord or a structure, they'll take more liberties to make it musical.I also love the folklore aspect of jazz. The oral tradition, what you learn by listening to what somebody tells you, a way of swinging - those things are interesting to me. When you break it down to the basic elements, there's a lot of possibility for growth." 1:39:03 PM ![]() |
Sorry, but this feed doesn't look very good at our old home, but that's how it will need to be for awhile. 9:06:26 AM ![]() |
Well, I went ahead and purchased Radio UserLand yesterday and got the serial number all in this morning, so it's official. And with that comes some committments, which like others will either be fully implemented or will languish as New things happen. Here's what we're meaning...
And lots of other implications, some of which are clogging my currently hazy brain or are out there unknown, waiting to suck more time away from the mission. And don't expect this transition overnight, because it just ain't gonna happen that way, no matter how much I'd love to jump in full-on. That just doesn't happen any more, as anyone following my head's recent ups and downs over at The New Jazz Thing can testify to. Time is of the essence and the mechanics of this whole blogging thing can't get in the way of the actual goal, which they tend to do sometimes (like right now, but reflection sometimes recenters...or reconfuses). The actual goal, by the way, is still being written, but it's definitely the next step in The New Jazz Thing, combining the direction of the Thursday evening "Live" radio show on Jazz 88 and the Freelance Weblogger scheme.
Anyway, here goes. |
