The Jazz Genius On Teaching Jazz To Newbies: Their Sex Life Will Improve

This and other tidbits in the latest installment by Jeff Fitzgerald, How to Win Friends and Influence People To Jazz. Here's the gist of the article and you have to guess (or read) where the improvements in sex life happen (and he does warn us about the the Ken Burns reference ahead of time)...

"To introduce the neophyte to jazz is a delicate thing. Should you take the Ken Burns (told you) approach and begin at the beginning with the very roots of jazz, or start by introducing them to the most accessible jazz and gently edging them on from there? Should you simply share your own favorite music and hope that they enjoy it as much as you do? Or should you just say "To hell with it" and point them to the Genius Guide, leaving me to do all the heavy lifting?"

Always pretty funny stuff...I'd like to have him on the show to talk about other funny stuff.

They've also got news of the NEA American Jazz Master Fellowships to Jimmy Heath, Elvin Jones, and Abbey Lincoln and some quality time with the Dave Holland Big Band (who's album we'll try to get to tonight).

Jazz Notes Sings The Passing Of IAJE Founder Matt Benton

In today's Jazz Notes, Ken Franckling's daily recap, he notes (for lack of another word at the moment) the passing of International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) founder, Matt Benton...

"As founding executive director of the National Association of Jazz Educators, later renamed the International Association for Jazz Education, Betton is credited with building the organization during its first 20 years and establishing its reputation as the primary voice and leading authority for jazz education worldwide. Today, IAJE has upwards of 8,000 members in 42 countries."

More on the passing.

Tomasz Stanko - Any Show After Glow From the Democratic Masses?

George Varga has a nice piece on Tomasz (last week's TNJT guest) in yesterday's UT. Tomasz continues the riff he let us in on last week...

"Jazz means to me very, very much. It's the kind of art that will exist in the future, and it's the most democratic kind of art. I get pleasure from playing, and give the audience pleasure with the playing."

Did you see the show at the Neurosciences last night? Use the Comment[] link below or call in to the show tonight at 619-234-1062 and let us all know what you thought. Did you follow his advice...

"What people need to know before attending one of my concerts is they have to trust my music," he stressed. "They have to trust it and use more intuition, and be prepared to listen to something different."

Hans Fjellestad Bring Frontier Life to San Diego and The New Jazz Thing. Tonight!

Hans, he of Trummerflora and other endevours, will be on the phone tonight at 6:10-ish to talk about Frontier Life, his new movie about a different view of Tijuana.

The story seems to be told through different 'scenes' in Tijuana culture (car racing, water, and other things we will find out about). Hiram Soto in the UT says...

"Feeding off the innovative and electronic sounds of the Nortec Collective music movement, the stories of illegal drag racers and the insights of young artists and social anthropologists, Fjellestad has created a documentary that brings to light the urban and artistic realities of contemporary Tijuana."

The film plus live performance is happening at MCA Downtown's TNT tonight from 7 to 11 pm (film at 8). Learn more about the film here, follow links to stories from there.
