The Night of Miff Mole's Unsilencing

Miff Mole, who becomes fully unsilenced tonight on Creative Music from 9 to 12 pm PT on Jazz 88 in San Diego (88.3 FM), speaks out on his Unsilent Night (which was far from my silenced one)...

"I have been a few places and I have seen a couple of things, but I can't remember ever feeling like I was Right In The Middle Of It like I was at Unsilent Night. The music came out of the cassette playing devices (15) and blended into one cloud of sound that roamed from the Trolley Station up to Symphony Hall, thru Horton Plaza, and finally, ethereally, each machine ran out of sound and we dispersed in every direction available."

Miff's show rocks for those who know and wish to know. Or unknow.

And this brings up a now unsilenced beef I have about the Radio UserLand commenting system, used on this blog. It needs to be more integrated in with the rest of the site so that I can easily point to people's comments and make them part of the flow of the site, instead of having to fully quote the comments to have others read them (if they don't click the Comment [] link below each post). I don't have the exact answer to what I want, but I know there's something lacking between the Radio Userland blog and the Radio Userland comment system. More research necessary.

And enough of these mixed message posts VO!

Let's Sing of the Unsung San Diego Jazz Artists Guild

George Varga timely speaking on the state of jazz in today's Union Tribune Night & Day...

"But one of the most significant successes here was also one of the most unsung: San Diego's Jazz Artists Guild celebrated its 10th year of promoting music in area schools.

The nonprofit organization has spent more than $200,000 over the past decade to provide free concerts and instruction to school kids who might otherwise never hear, let alone learn to play, jazz. Imagine the potential impact if every city had a Jazz Artists Guild of its own."

A little JAG sluthing got me a phone number, which turned out to be Marvin Drucker, who was there at the start and who calls his current position a "friend of the court". The JAG just recently completed a 5 week jazz program for about 22 school kids that climaxed last week with a performance of original improvisations by the students. The program was funded by a grant from some foundation that I couldn't get the name of and should follow up on (that was me on the freeway dodging cars and writing down phone numbers) . They also host jazz parties (that's the second time in a month that term has come up) and periodic jam sessions at the San Diego Musicians Union. Among other things, it sounds like. Marv hooked me up with Jack Hoffman who will be sending me some more background on the guild.

We're trying to set up a little singing of the unsung JAG on tonight's show. Stay tuned. The goal for tonight would be do a little get acquainted interview and find out what's up coming for the JAG. And find out what some of the goals of the organization are and find out how we can help and get involved.

BTW, George is a great guy and tells it like it is on Jazz, but why'd he have to totally scoop me on the Jazz part of tomorrow's Music of 2002 on The Lounge (6:30 pm on KPBS Radio in San Diego at 89.5 FM or Internet)?! Also, I wonder how many of those best jazz albums (same article) were from major label jazz artists?
