Organizing My On-Line Presence For 2003 and Beyond
I'm going to try and spend the bulk of this next week's writing and computer playing in a dedicated effort to map out a plan for my on-going on-line presence. There are quite a few things to think about moving forward and I, as much as anyone I know, need to be working on things things with some big plan as to where it's all heading. Some of the thing that need sorting out are...
- Thursday show audience. How to best serve those folks that tune into the show. Other things come from that...
- Email List. I need to have some way to remind friends and acquaintances about the show each Thursday and what's being written about on the weblog. You'd probably not be surprised that you aren't the only one that remembers about the radio show only when you see me in person, "That's right! I need to remember to tune you in. What's the radio station number?"
- Upcoming events calendar. Closely related to above. With ability to throw a particular event on your calendar, maybe using iCalendar/vCalendar which are standard calendar event formats. Calendar also is for me to keep track of who's going to be on the show and when.
- Show playlist archives. Desperately need to get back to posting the weekly set list either in real time during the show or right after the show. Miff Mole's archives are supreme and something to be idolized.
- Vince Outlaw vs. The New Jazz Thing. I need to figure out if I should differentiate the weblogs of the show vs. my personal weblog. To this point, I currently post everything to my personal weblog and route those Jazz / Arts / Music related posts to the show weblog. It's somewhat confusing if you ask me, but I'm not exactly sure how to give the music-only people what they want and remain true to the wide-open nature of the posts at my blog (which seems to spill over into the show nowadays anyways).
- Building New Weblogs. Integrating other event-related weblogs with the Vince Outlaw personal weblog or the show weblog. They need to be separate items from the VO whole, but integrated in so that folks stopping there can easily jump up to the show and the personal weblog. The Playboy Jazz Festival weblog, the Doug Randall Memorial Weblog, The Anthony Wilson Weblog, Vince Outlaw Tech News...all of these are weblogs created this year and need some sort of cohesive branding with Vince Outlaw or The New Jazz Thing. I've hit on something here...look where those sites rank when Google is searched (playboy jazz festival-2, doug randall-1, anthony wilson-4)Are they just categories of posts? Are they really separate weblogs? What are these things? There are lots of artists that don't have a presence on the web that could benefit from a weblog, even it's maintained by me.
- Multi-media blogging. How to more easily intergrate photograph slide shows, audio cuts of interviews / mixes / promos / reporting, and now video into the site. Make some decisions on what tools to use, what formats to support, etc. so it's not so haphazard. I've been getting into Quicktime recently, but it's seems a little like overkill for simple photo slideshows and moving up to providing any video on the site means learning a lot more about resolutions, frame rates, compressions...it's mind blowing.
- Mobile blogging. I really want to be able to blog from anywhere. The current client-based program I'm using, Radio Userland, means I need to be able to access my home computer from anywhere and it has been working pretty good (as this post is testament...I'm not at home right now) so far. I may continue with this model and just expand my ability to get to it from any place in my house or the Internet. Do I go with a laptop, a Tibook, a PocketPC PDA, or what? How do I blog the Playboy Jazz Festival in multi-media this year?
- Site design. My weblog templates pretty much stink, don't brand me, my show, or any kind of community / contact / feedback functionality, regardless of how limited that is right now. Time for a new site design incorporating the ideas above. I also need to transfer this site design to t-shirts that at least I wear around town and can possibly make available via stickers, or other things...gotta get the name around and known.
So, anyway, I'm trying to keep focused on these things of this manner for the next week or so without a lot of other posting, which will be hard because there's so much killer stuff to read and explore via Doc, Dave, or others in that sorry-ass blog list on the right.
