Who's That Strange Daddy In My UpsideDown Glasses

The Mirror Image of Daddy

How much like me is little miss cool? The possibilities of seeing your reflection in the eyes of your child are limitless. Who is a mirror reflection of who?

This was submitted to The Mirror Project, which I haven't done for awhile (since here and there). That first one of mine was number 197, now they are up to 12305...wow.

[Later...] The Mirror Project accepts #12314! What an honor and what quick turnaround. That Heather Champ babe must not be that busy. Or she's got lots of little harrumph elves doing her biddig behind the project scenes (is that Derrick dude still hanging around?) Anyway, great to see Jezebel and all her offspring are alive and well in 2003, Baby!

The Swoosh Is In The Mail and Other Human-Like Stories

Thom Hartman in Now Corporations Claim The "Right To Lie", giving pretty much the basics of the story that begins this overview of the rights that corporations want that the constitutional writers didn't think they should have,

"Instead of refuting Kasky's charge by proving in court that they didn't lie, however, Nike instead chose to argue that corporations should enjoy the same "free speech" right to deceive that individual human citizens have in their personal lives. If people have the constitutionally protected right to say, "The check is in the mail," or, "That looks great on you," then, Nike's reasoning goes, a corporation should have the same right to say whatever they want in their corporate PR campaigns."

Basically, Nike (and a list of other companies that are backing them up on this) want to be able to deceive you and then claim it's OK because they have a right to free speech just like regular people do. The problem is that corporations aren't people and were never intended to be treated like people (and you could claim a lot of them don't act like people even though humans are their customer base, go figure). This article, while a little lengthy, really does explain the difference between the right of humans and the priviledges of corporations. I was able to understand it and get a lot out of it.

Thanks again Doc (by who's headline it seems is watching too many Southwest Airlines commercials).

Aaron Parks Interview On The New Jazz Thing Available Via MP3 Streaming and Download

Aaron Parks and his mom, Judy Stein, came by the Jazz 88 studios on Thursday night, 1/2/3, and sat in on The New Jazz Thing! Aaron was in town for a pair of dates at Dizzy's San Diego, 1/2/3 (solo, as part of the Piano Summit) and 1/4/3 (with the Aaron Parks Trio). It was a treat to be able to talk to an artist who is just getting started and can really relate to those first memories of knowing that Jazz and music was something special for him. Getting those thoughts on the record, for current thought and future reference point, was a goal and we got into some of those things in the interview. Enjoy!

Aaron Parks Interview - Part 1
Introducing Aaron by way of the tune 'Solar' from Aaron's disc Shadows, in the first part of the interview, we talked about his beginnings and the whole story of his prodigical (my word) rise to current Jazz heights. We touched on some of his feelings knowing that he wanted to make the commitment to finish high-school and enter college at 13, moving to New York for further schooling and completion of his Bachelor's degree in music, and various other topics. We also talked about the solo piano gig at Dizzy's (now last night). Listen to Part 1 via any of the following links:

  • MP3 Streaming - Low Fi (Recommended). The quality is pretty good (and using it allows more people to hear the interview).
  • MP3 Streaming - High Fi.
  • MP3 Download (11Mb). For taking the interview on the road with you.

Aaron Parks Interview - Part 2
A little bit of 'Dancing By Myself' from Shadows led into a discussion of his trio and the date they are playing at Dizzy's on Saturday, 1/4/2003. Aaron talked about the differences in playing solo vs. trio. We also talked about Aaron's other interests and things that inspire him, such as literature. We close the interview with 'Nefertiti' by Miles Davis, something picked out by Aaron as a piece that has inspired him. Listen to Part 2 via any of the following links:

  • MP3 Streaming - Low Fi (Recommended). The quality is pretty good (and using it allows more people to hear the interview).
  • MP3 Streaming - High Fi.
  • MP3 Download (11Mb). For taking the interview on the road with you.

Thanks to Miff Mole for chauffering Aaron and Judy back to their hotel after the interview. What a dude!
