Terry Vosbein Talks of the Re-Compositions of Bill Russo and Other Life Celebrations

Terry Vosbein sat in on The New Jazz Thing, Thursday night 1/16/03, to talk about the music of Bill Russo, who passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2003. Here's some background on Bill's passing and Terry's qualifications.

Terry Vosbein on Bill Russo - Part 1
Terry lets us know how he knew Bill and that he was going to lunch with him at the IAJE, which Bill ended up missing and then passing away on Saturday. Terry gets into what made Bill Russo so different in his arranging (a name that Terry tells us Bill didn't like, he called it 're-composition). He discusses one of Bill's favorite of his own work, "Fascinatin' Rhythm", which we end part 1 of the interview by playing. Check it out:

Terry Vosbein on Bill Russo - Part 2
Coming out of Russo's re-composition of Fascinatin' Rhythm, Terry talks a bit about Russo's trombone work. We also get into some of the projects that Terry is working on and end with his take on another Russo composition (and re-composition), "Egdon Heath", and end the interview with that tune. • Howard Mandel Interview On-Line Via MP3 Streaming and Download

Howard Mandel joined The New Jazz Thing Live on Thursday, 1/16/2003, to discuss the apprenticeship system of educating Jazz musicians, a long tradition that is being impacted by the growth of formalized education in Music schools and colleges.

Here's a quick rundown of what you can listen to below: With Eddie Palmieri's "La Perfecta II" leading into the interview (Howard is working on a project related to Eddie), we got right into talking about his highlights of the IAJE 2003 conference. Lots of Jazz information and music to listen to and the local Toronto scene to check out. We talked about the way students of Jazz learned before (mostly on-the-job experience) and now (lots of formalized classes, some on-the-job). Lots of areas to explore here in the future. We ended the interview with something from Dr. Billy Taylor's "Live at IAJE 2001" disc. If you have something to share about the interview, do so using the Comment [] link below.
