"Microsoft, Macrovision join to halt CD 'ripping'." [Yahoo News]
" Each CD would include a set of standard music files that could not be ripped on a PC, plus a set of Microsoft Windows Media music files that can be downloaded -- drag-and-drop style -- to the PC."
Another way of extending the MS monopoly. Anybody who wants a computer-playable file will need Windows Media compatibility. And it seems unlikely that MS will provide it for Linux or any OS other than Apple's. (And you can bet that Apple support is predicated upon Apple remaining a marginal player in the OS space.) If Windows Media compatibility is cloned and becomes any kind of problem for MS, MS will be able and highly motivated to use its patent portfolio against the cloners.
