"Last week, analyst Charles Wolf of Needham & Co. in New York issued a detailed report examining the potential of the iTunes Music Store. Wolf estimates that once Apple has the Windows version of iTunes in place, the store could capture 20 percent of the pay-per-download market." [SunSpot.net via MacInTouch]

In Wolf's view this would lead to a $600 million/year business totally independent of the Macintosh, and also independent of iPod sales, which would no doubt be substantial. Net profit from this business alone would nearly equal Apple's 2002 net profit.

"While teens and young adults consume many different types of media, the study revealed that the Internet surpasses them all in the amount of time spent, which in an average week is as follows: (1) 16.7 hours online (excluding email), (2) 13.6 hours watching TV, (3) 12 hours listening to the radio, (4) 7.7 hours talking on the phone, (5) Six hours reading books and magazines (personal, not scholastic). The study, which polled more than 2,500 teens and young adults (ages 13-24) using both qualitative and quantitative methods, revealed that 'control' -- the ability to personalize and manage the media experience and content -- emerged as the primary reason this group chooses the Internet over other forms of media. Maybe there are substantive reasons why we can't, but it makes me sick to my stomach that we aren't doing more for these people.

Update, an hour later: Breaking news on CNN: "President Bush orders U.S. troops into position off coast of Liberia. Details soon."

Maybe there's hope.
