"'We’re going to see a lot more spam, instead of less,' said David Sorkin, who teaches a spam law course at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. 'What most of the state statutes do is legitimize spam as long as you don’t also commit fraud.' [Stateline.org]

"Measuring the cost of spam, which takes into account such factors as lost productivity and wasted time, is an imprecise science, and estimates on its total toll vary: Ferris Research reckons that spam cost the United States $10 billion in 2003, while Nucleus Research pegs the U.S. cost around $87 billion." "MusicMatch to offer subscription free downloads... First BuyMusic.com, now MusicMatch. The online music company today said it will offer an Apple iTunes Music Store-style subscription-free service in the autumn." [Register.com]
I find it interesting that these subscription-free services are emerging. Frankly, if the price of a track is low enough, it really doesn't matter very much to me if a subscription can get me unlimited access to all music via a "celestial jukebox" or not. The main difference is that the celestial jukebox model eliminates the financial risk in giving something a listen that I might not like.
Interestingly (to me) this means that a really reliable recommendation engine may be a key tool in making the pay-per-download model more competitive with a subscription model.

For someone as interested in songwriting as I am, an idea of heaven is a Jimmy Webb album produced by George Martin. I purchased the CD used on Amazon since it isn't in print any longer, and now being imported into iTunes.
