By the way, the new version of Patilla.com has been live since saturday. Let me know what you think. That's my baby, a year's work. I have a new found respect for software developers...

I know what I did is peanuts compare to a big application or an Operating System, but I got a glimpse of the main obstacle in software development. The interrelation of decisions. How each past decision affects present decisions, and trying to look ahead how the present decision limits or affects some future decisions. Also, the decisions have to be pretty fast sometimes, because they are stopping further advance... Hard stuff really. So my hat goes off to anyone that has finish a usable application.

Rot in Hell.

I heard from Macy's and GiftCertificates.com that someone bought hundreds of dollars' worth of gift certificates online using my credit card. Obviously, I cancelled the card immediately.

Lessons to draw from this?

1. I was impressed that the two establishments caught the anomalous behavior.

2. I never had a serious worry about being stuck for the cost of the stolen goods.

3. It's not at all clear that my card number was stolen because of my own online use of it. It could have been any real world vendor who jotted down the number.

Overall: My confidence in the safety of online buying remains unshaken. I don't like the rest of you stinking humans as much as I once did, but I'll get over it. [JOHO the Blog]

Is very easy for the vendor to catch frauds, it's easier for the credit card companies, but the latter has no incentive. Either the vendor or the insurance pays for most frauds. Since insurance is a fixed cost they do not care. We catch a lot of fraud attempts, but we can do very little to catch the scum... If the police had any interest we could set up false shipments to catch them. The police doesn't care, at least here. In the US they only care about the big fish, that is the organized crime doing wholesale fraud.
