Karlin: "Why do fanatical devotees of computer operating systems always miss the point?" [Scripting News]
I think there are two reasons for this. First, is the natural need to justify your choice. This is felt with other products too. The second part is the impossibility of really compare the products, except by using them day in and day out for months. With most products, say cars, you can really make a good comparison in a short time, you can atually compare features and decide. With operating systems there is so much to be discovered, so much that can be fustrating, so much that could annoy you in the long run, that you really have to change operating systems just to compare them. For this reason, most people just use one operating system at a time and try to justify their choice through the only means available... ignorance. I know I joke about this a lot, but the reallity is that all (modern) operating systems are usable and most adecuate to satisfy most needs. There is a lot of personal taste involved, there is more effort to do certain things (security in Windows, installing software in Linux, using some hardware in Mac OS X), but, sometimes, it is worth it. Make your choice and, really, What do you care what other people think?
