Necessity as the Mother of Tenure?. Inventing should be part of the university mission, and a requirement for professors seeking tenure. By By ERICH E. KUNHARDT. [NYT > Opinion]
Well, the argument looks good at first, but after you realize that the US is losing the battle for science, what can universities do, really? Less and less US citizens are going into science and technology and with the sharp drop of foreign students (consequence of the stiffer post 9/11 security measures, that make it harder to get a Visa for the US, and the improvement made by european universities in this front), Who is supposed to make the inventions and get the patents? People think that there is no relation between science, knowledge and development, and while I admit that there doesn't seem to be a causal relation, it is clear that there is no development without science and knowledge.
