ITWorld Canada, 1/12/04: HP unifies management of its server lines

FRAMINGHAM - Hewlett-Packard Co. this week announced more than 40 IT management products and services in an effort to further its autonomic computing initiative, including new software that provides systems management capabilities across its Windows, Linux and Unix server lines.

Subhash Tantry, executive vice president of engineering and operations at CenterBeam Inc., said the San Jose-based IT outsourcing vendor wants to use Systems Insight Manager in its data centre, which houses hundreds of servers for the company's North American customers. CenterBeam runs HP's Insight Manager 7 tool now but needs the new software's cross-platform capabilities.
"We service the midsize market, and the diversity of hardware and software is huge," Tantry said. "We prefer to have one (management tool) that is extensive and monitors multiple nodes." Systems Insight Manager also has a "more intuitive and process-oriented interface," he added.

Splashes out on the Feld Group
Electronic Data Systems has acquired the Feld Group, a privately held technology consulting company, in an effort to bolster its outsourcing services.
Under the deal, announced on Monday, EDS paid $89m in cash and stock for Feld, which focuses on helping technology companies reorganise and realign their operations.
Mike Jordan, chief executive of EDS, said in a statement: "We see tremendous growth opportunities in the business process outsourcing [and] business transformation services market, and the addition of the Feld Group will greatly enhance our offerings and expertise in the field."

Internetnews.com, 1/13/04: One Big Monster IE Patch Day

Microsoft (Quote, Chart) is expected to release a slew of security patches Tuesday under the new monthly release cycle, including a cumulative patch to plug some known vulnerabilities in the popular Internet Explorer (IE) Web browser.
The software giant was planning to fix the IE flaws in the December release, but a company official told internetnews.com that problems during the testing phase pushed back the release date.

Computerworld, 1/12/04: Microsoft extends Windows 98, ME support to 2006
The support had been slated to end this Friday

Days before it was to end support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Corp. has decided to extend the life of the products until June 30, 2006.
The software vendor also said in a statement today that it had extended support for Windows Millennium Edition, which was set to end Dec. 31, until June 30, 2006.
