Office 2003 System is a means to further solidify Microsoft’s firm footing on the desktop by building connections to back-end infrastructure and applications. At the same time, it threatens to compromise many Information Technology (IT) organizations’ enterprise architecture decisions.
The Bottom Line: While collaboration and interoperability enhancements in Office 2003 will be welcome, the semblance of locked connections between expensive and hard-to-control clients and back-end infrastructure and data will compel many companies to reconsider Microsoft’s position in the enterprise.

eWeek, 1/13/04: Yahoo's Q4 Profit Jumps 62 Percent

Yahoo! Inc. rode a rising wave of online advertising to a 62 percent increase in its fourth-quarter profit, continuing the Internet powerhouse's robust recovery from the dot-com downturn.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said Wednesday that it earned $75 million, or 11 cents per share, during the final three months of 2003. That compared with net income of $46.2 million, or 8 cents per share, at the same time in 2002.

San José Mercury News, 1/15/04: Apple earnings rise on strong iPod and laptop sales
Strong holiday sales of portable notebook computers and the iPod music player helped Apple Computer Inc.'s first-quarter results easily beat Wall Street expectations Wednesday.
For the three months ended Dec. 27, Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said it earned $63 million, or 17 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $8 million, or 2 cents per share, in the same period last year.
Revenue for the quarter reached a four-year high of $2 billion, up 36 percent from the year-ago quarter.

San José Mercury News, 1/15/04: Intel reports record Q4 sales
Intel Corp. posted better-than-expected profits and record revenue in the fourth quarter, a period marked by robust global demand for the company's computer chips in laptop, desktop and business machines.
The results offered strong vindication of Intel's decision to continue spending on research and equipment during the darkest months of the technology downturn. However, Intel's stock slid nearly 3 percent after the report.
Last year ``began with a question mark and ended with an exclamation point,'' Andy Bryant, Intel's chief financial officer, said after Wednesday's report. ``As the economic climate improved, the robust microprocessor business led the year to a strong finish.''

San José Mercury News, 1/15/04: PC shipments reflect improving economy
Worldwide PC shipments in 2003 showed double-digit growth for the first time since 2000 as consumers took advantage of falling prices and more people bought notebooks, according to preliminary numbers released Wednesday by two research companies.
About 152.6 million units were shipped in 2003, an 11.4 percent increase over the previous year, according to Framingham, Mass.-based IDC.
