According to a report on NPR, Boston's Cardinal Law is faced with a potential $100M liability on the various cases of sexual abuse committed by priests in his archdiocese. Reportedly he is entertaining the idea of approaching wealthy donors for contributions to a fund that will cover this liability.
I don't get it. Is it part of catholic "good works" to help Mother Church pay for all the deviants that it allowed to abuse children? I thought this kind of pandering had gone out of style right around the Reformation? And why are they doing this? Appearantly his Eminence doesn't want to take the stand during a trial. A trial that, by the way, would cap the damages at $20,000 per lawsuit. So rather than to face the considerable wrath of outraged parents, public and a paparazzi style media, his Eminence will make a few calls and raise the needed money. " Ted me boyo our Mother Church needs ya. We'll be needin some of that Kennedy cash if ya can spare some. " (come to think of it, I don't know if Hyanisport is part and parcel of the Boston Archdiocese)
