Govinda

Recently I came across an old recording of “Govinda”  sung by the members of the Rhada Temple in London in 1970. The most noteworthy member of this temple, and lifelong supporter of the London Krishna community was the late George Harrison. Interestingly, listening to this recording it is almost as though you are hearing The Beatles performing in Hindu. Not quite, but Harrison’s unmistakable Beatle voice lends this faint whisper of the Fab Four to this song. The recording was made in 1970, only a few short years after the Krishna’s got their start in New York City.  Isn’t it interesting that artists like Harrison, being creative and spiritual, were drawn to Eastern philosophies as an alternative to the traditional Western Judeo-Christian theology. Maybe I’m dreaming, but I’m certain that one can hear the innocence and excitement of the performers of this chant. Something that had probably been lost from the stale middle class renditions of “Amazing Grace” that one would come across in the typical English church. As a matter of fact if you look at some of the Trance (Rave) stuff by Delirium you might hear a full-on Krishna chant, including a great number of people singing quite excitedly while being accompanied by cymbals and Conch shells. As far as I know Delirium has no affiliations with the Krishna's (and neither do I ).
