Stereophile Magazine - Sony & Universal to cease CD production in favor of Hybrid SACD?"It also suggests that the record companies have decided that the CD copy-protection schemes tried out in the last few years are lost causes, and are turning to the well-protected SACD."
Interesting but something is wrong with this story. Sony and Universal are going to stop releasing CDs? They're going to sell only hybrids? Who's going to pay for the discs? The labels are going to take a loss? I don't think so. And the consumer certainly isn't going to pay for it. Finally, the copy protection on the Red Book CD layer of a hybrid disc is no better or worse than the copy protection on a standard Red Book audio disc. So what are we talking about here?
