Satellite radio to the rescue. Corporate dreck dominates the FM airwaves like never before, but hope for music lovers may finally have arrived. [Salon.com]"We went national in November of 2001, and had 76,000 subscribers by end of first quarter. It's the fastest growing audio product in 20 years."

An absolutely glowing report on satellite radio. An interesting read.

Calibrating the DVD's Sound to Each Hearer's Vantage Point. Equalizers arrays of tone controls that affect tiny slices of the frequency range can help. By Ivan Berger. [New York Times: Technology]
Bose has a consumer system for correcting the frequency response of a listening room. It seems to be reasonably well thought out. Not my favourite approach but could help in some situations. It's best to treat the room and place the speakers properly. But this is usually more easily said than done.

Turn Down That Coffee Table: a Morphing Soundboard. There are people who are going to find the Soundbug useful, just like there are people who win lotteries. For the rest of us, though, this undeniably unique sound projection tool is a wonderful example of unnecessary ingenuity. By Barnaby J. Feder. [New York Times: Technology]

The Office Software That Roared. For those waiting for an alternative to Microsoft's Office software, a new contender has come along -- and it's free. By David Pogue. [New York Times: Technology]' Some people should download OpenOffice immediately. That includes anyone who doesn't have Microsoft Office but would like the ability to open and edit documents that other people send along. Conscientious objectors to the Microsoft monopoly should also rejoice, along with anyone who uses more than two PC's and doesn't feel like shelling out for a second or third copy of Microsoft Office. '
Not ThinkFree Office but OpenOffic. There's an OS X version in the works. Pogue is such a great writer. This looks to be a thorough and balanced look at an interesting product.

Charles Moore looks at the Pismo upgrades. In an article posted yesterday on Applelinks, Charles Moore compares the recently announced G4 processor upgrades for the Pismo PowerBooks in Some thoughts on the new PowerBook Pismo G4 upgrades. His conclusion: It is tempting to consider the upgrade for the benefits of Altivec graphics processing in supported applications like PhotoShop, and in the OS X Finder... [Rob McNair-Huff: OS X 10.1.4]
I'll buy a new machine. My hard drive is full and this upgrade doesn't buy me the graphics chip that Jaguar will take advantage of. Not worth it simply to speed up the Finder in OS X.
