More useful key combinations [Mac OS X Hints]Rather more cumbersome than having the power key on the keyboard, but it's good to know that it's possible to shut down/restart from the keyboard, especially for those of us who have their CPUs in another room.

Rod Cardoza followed yesterday's news about Umax's Mac OS X restrictions with an alternative scanning utility
(and VueScan is another option):
Umax Astra users need not worry about this announcement since superior
3rd-party alternatives are available for Umax scanners providing OS X
compatibility. The most outstanding option in my experience, is
SilverFast Ai from LaserSoft Imaging, Inc. [Macintouch]Oooh. So close. My heapy scanner is listed but apparently only works in SCSI mode in OS X. I need USB. Perhaps it will show up eventually.

Tim Chong writes of a potential FireWire problem, apparently documented in Japanese-language web pages:
"According to this article [FireWire Dead] by
Medical Mac, and this announcement
by Ratoc
Corporation, both articles are pretty long and technical (and in
Japanese), but basically it says that if you plug bus-powered
FireWire devices into a Mac while the Mac's power is on there is a
possibility of the firewire port being damaged.
Just thought the rest of the world should know."
[Macintouch]Yikes. By that description we're talking about iPods as well.

Checking out WeatherPop Advance 1.1. I am taking a look at the WeatherPop Advance 1.1 program from Glucose Development Corp. The program adds a weather icon to your menu bar under OS X that when clicked offers a drop-down menu with current weather information and forecasts for the next four days, based on your zip code. There is a 14-day demo of the program available, and the shareware fee is just $8... [Rob McNair-Huff: OS X 10.1.4]Hey, this is cute. You can set the temperature to metric and you can type in the name of a city. I see the temp here in Toronto in my tool bar. If I click on the icon I can see many other details about current conditions and a five day forcast.

Sonic HD. | We sorted out the problem we were having with the new Sonic HD system. It turned out that one of the two Sonic cards is defective. Pull it out and the things is just fine. But now that we can get the system to boot we discover that I was given a temporary key and that it has expiered. Very nice. How frustrating. At least the end is in site. I'm very much looking forward to getting our whole workflow moved over to this system.
|
| We were headed toward this solution but I got some helpful nudges from the Sonic Users Group mailing list. David Glasser at AirShow Mastering said that he'd had trouble getting his G4 to boot as well and it turned dout to be an HD card. Bingo. Knowing this we could approach our trouble shooting with a direction and much more confidence. Thanks David!

The death of Rolling Stone. The magazine that invented rock journalism lost its reason to exist years ago. Now, with a British lad-mag editor taking the helm, it's time to pull the plug. [Salon.com]Ironic given that Salon may be on its last legs. But I haven't even looked through a Rolling Stone mag in years.
