Michael B. Oren, author of Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East (Number 6 on Amazon.com) was speaking today at Temple Holy Blossom in Toronto, Ontario in front of crowed of 400-500 people. His hour-long speech, which was being taped for TV Ontario, covered several points including:

  • The similarities between 1967 and present day in terms of how small actions can unwittingly lead to war.
  • The narrowly adverted Egyptian plans for a first strike on Israel how Israel unsuccessfully tried to convince Jordan to stay out of the war.
  • Colin Powell’s role in ordering Syria to rein in the Hezzbollah terror group to prevent a possible regional war following the Passover Massacre.
  • His role as a IDF liaison with the US Navy during the Gulf War.

In a question and answer period Oren stated he was one of the only people he knew that opposed the West Bank security fence, however it was unclear if he opposed unilateral withdrawal or the fence itself.

Overall he was very eloquent and fully capable of explaining the causes and results of the Six-Day War.
