FCC pushes digital TV adoption. The commission says all new TV sets must include digital receivers by 2007, but it's more tentative about techniques to limit illicit copying. [CNET News.com]
FCC wades into digital TV, piracy debate. On Thursday morning, the FCC's commissioners are expected to approve a set of proposed regulations that eventually would implant anti-copying technology into the next generation of digital TV receivers. [CNET News.com]
"Right now, I can digitally record a news program in my living room, then watch that recording in another room, or in my office, or at my friend's house," said Chris Murray, an attorney at Consumers Union, which publishes the magazine Consumer Reports. "Will the FCC's rulemaking guarantee that I'll continue to be able to do this in the future?"<rant>And that seems to be the key issue here. Though I am against piracy (really, I am!) and support the concept of copyright (really, I do!), I am not willing to give up my rights to fair use of copyrighted material and be treated like a criminal in the name of stopping piracy. The Hollywood lobbyists are not only going crazy with crap like the Berman bill that would allow them to hack our computers, but they're pushing (and apparently paying) so hard that "Congress has exerted tremendous pressure on the FCC to spur the availability of digital television while limiting unauthorized redistribution of content." Excuse me, but copying something to watch in another room IS NOT criminal activity and should never be treated like it is!
These zealots are anti-consumer and anti-technology! What would happen if a large portion of the masses just said we've had enough and boycotted all of the so-called "entertainment" coming out of Hollywood? They are so clueless.</rant>
Will Cox: "Spam is not targeted advertising. It's broadcast. Tossed on the street in the hope that one of many millions might be in debt, have a small johnson, have performance issues, want to look at pictures, want to work from home, need a lower mortgage rate -- or a higher rate of return. Oddly enough, the same things that you find advertised on late-night broadcast television."
