DaveNet: "Lott tripped by bloggers?" [Scripting News]
I really doubt it. The first report I remember hearing or seeing about Lott's comments was on Saturday (12/7) on CNN television news. The Washington Post reported the comments being made on the same day (sorry, I don't link to sites that use pop-under ads). It was discussed (and Lott was strongly criticized) on CNN Capital Gang on Saturday as well. As far as I can see, Andrew Sullivan started blogging about it on the Sunday, the 8th and continued on Monday, the 9th (via InstaPundit.com). Also, as reported by both CBS and CNN on the 10th, Al Gore made harsh criticisms on a CNN show on Monday, and Jesse Jackson also made a strong statement on that day. Members of the House Congressional Black Caucus questioned whether someone who issued a statement such as Lott's should be in "the leadership" on Tuesday.
Many bloggers had something to say during the same time frame. Yes - weblogs gave these people voices, but I doubt that made any real difference in Lott's fate. It appears that except for a few people, blogdom took just as long to respond as the media and the politicians did. Search for "Lott" at blogdex and you'll see a fair amount of noise in response to what was being reported by the media (and other bloggers). Bloggers didn't trip Lott. They just spoke their minds. Lott tripped himself. In the end, I doubt that any of the politicos were reading blogs before their calls for Lott's resignation or censure by the Senate...

"This new initiative should serve as a clarion call for retail outlets of all shapes and sizes that we take music piracy seriously and they need to get their house in order," RIAA Chief Executive Hilary Rosen said in a prepared statement.
