"Drumbeat for Mother Earth"

Many scientists and tribal people consider persistent toxic chemicals to be the greatest threat to the long-term survival of Indigenous Peoples. "Drumbeat for Mother Earth" explores how these chemicals contaminate the traditional food web, violate treaty rights, travel long distances, and are passed from one generation to the next during pregnancy, causing cancer, learning disabilities, and other serious health problems. "Drumbeat for Mother Earth" is part of the "First Peoples' TV"series made possible by DreamCatchers, a non-profit organization working to bring Native films to a wider audience.

QUOTE O' THE DAY

"People talk peace. But men give their life's work to war. It won't stop 'til there is as much brains and scientific study put to aid peace as there is to promote war."
- - Will Rogers (Cherokee)

RHINO HERE:
Last week in my 7/12 blog entry entitled Bush to spend MILLIONS covering up missing BILLIONS, I featured Eloise Cobel's, Indian Anti-trust case. She was featued that night on ABC news and just Friday, Congress voted down a couple aspects of Shrub & Co's attempt to shirk Uncle Sam's responsibility in that fight. YEA! A battle won for the good guys. We'll see how that particular war pans out though. Anyway, there's a great web site that summarizes news from "Indian Country" called INDIANZ.COM:

http://www.indianz.com

I highly recommend clicking in once in awhile if you don't already, to get a taste of Indian humor applied to current events. Here's a bit of their commentary on the Cobel case developments.

FRIDAY, JULY 19, 2002

It's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
===========
Indian Country - You beat the anti-trust fund and the anti-gaming provisions back by huge margins. The guilty consciences of all those white lawmakers must have kicked in! Or maybe it was the campaign contributions...

Judge Royce Lamberth - You're "out of control," some in Congress say. Someone has to got to be, we say. But could you hold some lawmakers in contempt for us?

John Miller - Congratulations on your win at the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. Size must not really matter!

Skull Valley Goshute Nuclear Dump - If the Bush administration opposes it, then it must be a project people should get behind.

The Losers
==========
Department of Interior - You ought to be ashamed of yourself for supporting a bill that limits your trust responsibilities.

Department of Interior - That's for sending mid-level delegates (i.e. flunkies) to an important Senate hearing you knew about well in advance. It showed lack of respect to the committee and Indian Country. But we weren't surprised.

House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee - Did you take your direction from Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles? Or did you finally realize, $614 million later, that the Interior can't do its job? Either way, it doesn't look good for you.

Jeff Benedict - Someone's out to terminate you! But this effort will actually succeed. We predict you will "switch" parties and work for a GOP congressman soon.

In The Middle
=============
Sacred Sites - Will a new bill finally protect you from oil, gas and other companies? We hope so, but we say return all the federal land that used to belong to tribes back to its rightful owners and this problem will be solved.

Tom Slonaker - Your stock isn't rising but since the Bush administration has yet to find a replacement, we figured you deserved a mention.
