QUOTES OF THE DAY
"There's an old sayin' in Tennessee, I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, uh, fool me once, shame on, (very long pause) shame on you, uh, fool me, can't get fooled again." - - George W. Bush (response to Iraqi offer to accept U.N. inspectors)
RHINO HERE: Seems shrub & co's momentum toward war on Iraq has at least temporarily been slowed by the Iraqi government's decision to let the U.N. inspectors in unconditionally. Shrub's not so eloquent nor witty response quoted above, implying the offer is insincere has been lambasted by world leaders including Nelson Mandela who told the press:
"What right has (U.S. President George W. Bush) to come and say that that offer is not genuine. We must condemn that very strongly. That is why I criticize most leaders, all over the world, for keeping quiet when one country wants to bully the whole world." - - Nelson Mandela
Meanwhile, thousands of people have been calling the White House switchboard to tell shrub they oppose this action. I did. I urge you to do the same. It took me less than 3 minutes. A few tries with redial to get past the busy signal, a short wait to get an operator who will thank you for saying "I oppose the proposed war against Iraq". I gave her a few more pieces of my mind but that's optional.
Phone the White House at 202-456-1111. Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00 pm.
And then there's Thomas L. Friedman's excellent Wednesday N.Y.Times essay below, telling us to don't believe the polls about Americans being supportive of this war, and warning that it's "the "undeterrables" — the kind of young Arab-Muslim men who... hate us more than they love their own lives, and therefore cannot be deterred" that are the real threat to us and our children, and that making war on Iraq will not affect them except to make them hate us more. As always, his insights are unique and telling.
