QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Nowadays it's about as big a crime to be dumb as it is to be dishonest". - - Will Rogers
RHINO HERE: And now come the mid term elections. As whimpy as so many of the Democrats have been, there were a surprising majority of them that voted against shrub's war, and quite a few of them were downright heros. It's common knowledge that the party not in the White House usually picks up congressional seats in the mid terms. But left leaning common knowledge says shrub and company are working hard right now to offset that trend. They want control of the White House AND Congress, and what do you think they're willing and able to do to get what they want? It's time now to support the Democrats who can make the difference. Four are highlighted below. Rick Larsen (D) for Washington's Second Congressional District Opposing Norma Smith (R) Spent the past two years in Congress voting on issues such as raising vehicle fuel standards, protecting reproductive rights, banning soft money donations, and preserving our civil liberties. He opposes drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge, weakening our environmental safeguards, and stonewalling by the Bush Administration in revealing the names of corporate executives and lobbyists who met with Cheney's energy task force. Paul Wellstone (D) for U.S. Senator from Minnesota Opposing Norm Coleman (R) Wellstone leads the fight against the industry-friendly Bush Administration on environmental protection, the future of social security, and prescription drug coverage for seniors. The insurance, pharmaceutical, tobacco, and oil industries have targeted Paul Wellstone by contributing generously to his Republican opponent, Norm Coleman. Contributors to the Coleman campaign include WorldCom, Halliburton, and Arthur Andersen[~]all looking to buy influence. With candidates from the Green Party and the Independence Party joining Coleman in challenging Paul Wellstone, the Minnesota Senate race is a toss up.
Rush Holt (D) for New Jersey's Twelfth Congressional District Opposing Buster Soaries (R) An expert in arms control and alternative energy sources. Who better than a rocket scientist to stand up to the Star Wars fantasy advocates and the drill and burn fossil fuel crowd in Washington?! A leader in protecting our environment, Congressman Holt cosponsored legislation to prevent drilling in the Alaska wilderness. He is fighting against the destructive off road vehicle, snowmobile, and jet-ski use in Yellowstone, Utah's San Rafael Swell, Delaware Water Gap and other sensitive environmental areas. His 2000 victory then was razor thin, winning by only 651 votes. Despite his incumbency, this race will be tight again.
Jay Inslee (D) for Washington's First Congressional District Opposing Joe Marine (R) Inslee led efforts in the House to impose price caps on electricity in the West in response to Enron's energy price manipulations in 2001. He fully supports the GAO's efforts to expose the energy companies' secret influence on the Cheney Energy Plan. He voted against drilling in the Arctic and in favor of raising auto emissions standards, introduced legislation providing incentives for clean energy and conservation (Clean Energy Incentives Act) and promoting generation of renewable energy in the home (Home Energy Generation Act). Jay Inslee is a tireless leader in addressing global climate change, preserving wilderness roadless areas, and protecting streams from mining runoff.
