Rhino is traveling until November 5th. He will post to the Blog as possible. QUOTE OF THE DAY "I'm tired of waiting. It's time for us to find our own voice, to do our own organizing, to push forward on reform, to push forward on issues of economic justice, and to make the United States of America, this good country, even better." - - Senator Paul Wellstone RHINO HERE: I woke up this morning (Saturday) in Cortona Italy, (here for a film shoot of "Under The Tuscan Sun") fired up my email to get out the weekend blog, and am now devastated upon learning of the death of Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife, Sheila, and their daughter Marcia. Apparently the plane (a King Air - twin-engine turboprop) went down in freezing rain near the Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport, about 175 miles north of Minneapolis. He was on his way to the funeral of the father of a state lawmaker. Eight people died in the crash. I think I'll skip the humor this weekend and provide excerpts and links to stories about Senator Paul Wellstone.

By Arianna Huffington "Something died in America," said civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis of Robert F. Kennedy's untimely death. "Something died in all of us." Paul Wellstone's entire political career was dedicated to bringing that something -- that soul -- back to American politics. From his out-of-nowhere populist election to the Senate in 1990 to his courageous, polls-be-damned vote against the president's Iraq invasion resolution, Wellstone always let his conscience guide the votes he cast and the policies he espoused. Throughout his time in the Senate, he was a tireless champion of those left out of our prosperity, fighting for affordable health care, raising the minimum wage, drug treatment programs, corporate reform and public financing of campaigns... Paul Wellstone, U.S. Senator from Minnesota and former ADA President, passed away in a plane crash early this morning, along with his wife, daughter and several staff members. He was a true progressive and a fighter for those in underserved communities. He will be deeply missed by all of us here at SCADA and by the many who knew and loved him. His contagious passion, leadership and loyalty touched many lives. During his first Senate term Wellstone led legislative battles to make health care more accessible and affordable, and won workers protection to take time from work to care for their families without losing their jobs. He helped raise the minimum wage, successfully fought to protect seniors' pension funds from corporate raiders, and authored historic ethics and lobbying reform measures that forever changed how the people's business is done on Capitol Hill. Since 1996, Wellstone has expanded health care coverage for those suffering from mental illness, worked with a bipartisan coalition to write a new farm bill, and blocked harsh bankruptcy reforms unfair to consumers as well as efforts to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. He has fought for and secured federal resources for Minnesota schools, and worked tirelessly on behalf of veterans, passing legislation to aid homeless veterans and securing compensation for "atomic veterans" suffering from cancers due to radiation exposure during their military service. He has been a leader in efforts to combat violence against women. In 2000, Wellstone joined with Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) to pass historic bipartisan legislation to prevent international sex trafficking of women and girls, establishing first-ever penalties for those who enslave and traffic in persons. He was opposed to the impending war with Iraq. In 1991, SCADA conferred on him the distinguished Eleanor Roosevelt Award. Our thoughts and prayers go to Mark and David Wellstone and their families. What a tremendous loss for all of us and for our country. Warm Regards, Susie Shannon Executive Director, So. Calif.
