QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND
"PBS Sucks" - - Rhino RHINO HERE: Michael Moore's Bowling For Columbine set the new all-time opening weekend box office record for a documentary in the United States! ($27,000 per screen average) This in spite of 18 new films opening last Friday in NYC and L.A. The hilarious and infuriating doc on fear/guns/violence in America broke the record set nearly 13 years ago by Moore's debut doc, "Roger & Me". http://www.bowlingforcolumbine.com
The N.Y. Times review of the movie is at: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/11/movies/11BOWL.html?8mu
Find where it's playing at: http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=47234 Being an issue oriented documentary filmmaker, it's no surprise PBS whimped out by not broadcasting the new Globalvision doc, "Counting On Democracy" in which Emmy-award winner Danny Schechter follows BBC TV reporter Greg Palast as he discovers how Katherine Harris removed up to 57,000 legal voters from Florida registries — mostly black — five months before the 2000 election.
PBS has turned down every one of my documentaries for ridiculous reasons, like "the narration is not up to national broadcast standards" they claimed. This was on my program "Wiping The Tears Of Seven Generations"... http://www.kifaru.com/tears4.html
... which after winning 25 festival awards, was broadcast by the Disney Channel as part of their "American Legacy Series". PBS apparently would have rather had an uppity British male narrate instead of the 80 year old Lakota woman speaking of her people's oral history. Then there was, "The Peyote Road; Ancient Religion In Contemporary Crisis"... http://www.kifaru.com/peyroad6.html
...which PBS said wasn't relevant to enough viewers, this during the legislative battle to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court "Smith" Decision which is what the program was designed for, and eventually succeeded in doing. My impression is that PBS execs would rather spend a million dollars an hour on non-issue pablum like baseball and jazz than risk their jobs on controversial issues — but enough rant.relevant
The good news is that while the public broadcast network chiefs refused to schedule "Counting On Democracy", dozens of local stations are insisting on showing the expose before the mid-term elections. 10-20 6 PM KQED SAN FRANCISCO- OAKLAND- SAN JOSE, CA; 10-24 9 PM KNME ALBUQUERQUE- SANTA FE, NM; 10-24 10 PM WPTD DAYTON, OH; 10-24 10 PM WPTO CINCINNATI, OH; 10-27 12 PM WGCU FORT MYERS- NAPLES, FL; 10-30 9 PM KBDI DENVER, CO; 10-31 10 PM KLCS LOS ANGELES, CA; 11-4 Midnight WNET NEW YORK, NY; 11-5 10 PM KCET LOS ANGELES, CA; 11-6 8 AM WHUT WASHINGTON, DC.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON "Counting On Democracy", GO TO: http://www.globalvision.org/program/fla/fla.html More good news is the wonderful alternative to PBS called WORLDLINK TV... http://www.worldlinktv.com
...a satellite network whose programmers are passionate about airing controversial docs, dramas and a collage of daily news reports from international sources. They also play 2 hour blocks of music videos from around the globe; Austrailia, South America, Egypt, Africa and elsewhere. If you don't have either Dish Network or Direct TV, WorldLink is a good enough reason to go out and get one. WorldLink is also home of "First People's TV" the first regularly scheduled (Thursday nights) nationally broadcast TV series concerning the tribal people's of the world. Yours truly, curator of the series. http://www.dreamcatchers.org/fptv/index.html If you're interested in American Indian stories, there are two new dramatic movies now playing in selected theatres:
— "Skins", which I highlighted in a previous Rhino's Blog: http://radio.weblogs.com/0103207/2002/08/27.html
— "The Business of Fancy Dancing" written and directed by author/poet Sherman Alexie, about a successful gay Indian author who returns after many years in the city, to his home reservation for the funeral of a friend.
