Apprehending him was probably impossible...We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq. The coalition would instantly have collapsed, the Arabs deserting it in anger and other allies pulling out as well. Under those circumstances, there was no viable 'exit strategy' we could see...Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different--and perhaps barren--outcome." - - President George H.W. Bush and his National Security Adviser, Brent Scowcroft (From their joint memoir, "A World Transformed") KNOW YOUR HISTORY - OCTOBER 21st 1967 -- (Oct. 21-22) US: A demonstration at the Pentagon organized by the National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam (MOBE) draws 100,000. Among them, the Yippies, Diggers, & many sorts of coyote clerics convene an "Exorcism of the Pentagon", intending to encircle it, and then levitating it, thereby ridding the world of the global evil spirit virus infecting all who work there. Psychedelic face paint & flowers stuck in barrels of guns scare the man enough that he arrests 647. Meanwhile 50,000 demonstrate against the war in Dubya D.C. I confused the lariat twirling world commentator, Will Rogers (born in 1879), with his son, Will Rogers Jr, the Will who was born October 20, 1911, who was also quite a do-er. Besides playing his Dad in the Warner Bros produced bio-pic, The Will Rogers Story, he also published The Beverly Hills Citizen for 18 years building it into one of the largest weeklies in the West. He was appointed to the California Maritime Commission in 1941 & soon was elected to So Cal's 16th Congressional District as a Democrat, championing many liberal causes, including those aiding European Jewry. In 1944, he enlisted in the U. S. Army, eventually receiving the Bronze Star for heroism in the Battle of the Bulge & the Purple Heart for injuries during the battle of the Ruhr. Will, Jr., was also an advocate for the Navajo Indian people, & a production consultant for the Tony Award-winning Will Rogers Follies. The Rogers family donated the Will Rogers State Park at Pacific Palisades & the Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica to the State of California. Rhino's guessin' Papa Will raised Junior right, with lots o' simple wisdom. TV TIP: "Singing our Stories" (Wednesday night on Link TV) A visionary journey through the landscape of Native North American music-from Tuscarora singer/songwriter Pura Fé to pop icon Rita Coolidge, from Blackfoot composer Olivia Tailfeathers and the Old Agency Singers to the traditional music of the Zuni Olla Maidens. This ground-breaking film profiles the "First Ladies" of indigenous song and pays tribute to the precious musical archive they preserve and celebrate. Through their language, heritage and homelands, the stories and songs of the women link the past to the present as they trace the voices of their ancestors. "Singing Our Stories" is part of the "First Peoples' TV" series made possible by DreamCatchers, a non-profit organization working to bring Native films to a wider audience. It's encouraging to see an old school Democrat speaking out loud & clear, taking leadership against the shrub gang. After checking out Senator Kennedy's eloquent address, I urge you to join me contacting his office to let him know we appreciate his courage. Word has it he's been receiving lots of hate mail for his comments & could use the support. Whatever integrity he had in the eyes of the American people should be as good as gone. The history books will eventually relegate him to the chapters on those diplomats and soldiers whose lies have unnecessarily killed thousands. The Man Who Knew CBS News, Wednesday 15 October 2003 In the run-up to the war in Iraq, one moment seemed to be a turning point: the day Secretary of State Colin Powell went to the United Nations to make the case for the invasion. Millions of people watched as he laid out the evidence and reached a damning conclusion -- that Saddam Hussein was in possession of weapons of mass destruction. Correspondent Scott Pelley has an interview with Greg Thielmann, a former expert on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Thielmann, a foreign-service officer for 25 years, now says that key evidence in the speech was misrepresented and the public was deceived. "I had a couple of initial reactions. Then I had a more mature reaction," says Thielmann, commenting on Powell's presentation to the United Nations. "I think my conclusion now is that it's probably one of the low points in his long, distinguished service to the nation."... MORE AT: http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/102103A.shtml . The anthrax karma continues. If Rhino's memory serves him right, the only anthrax that has been used in attacks during this "War On Terror" were shown to have come from a US Government lab. So pumping more fear, the shrub gang insisted the troops get immunized and now those inoculations are suspected of causing a wave of mysterious deaths in Iraq. Mystery blood clots felling U.S. troops By Mark Benjamin, UPI, 10/06/03 WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Unexplained blood clots are among the reasons a number of U.S. soldiers in Operation Iraqi Freedom have died from sudden illnesses, an investigation by United Press International has found. In addition to NBC News Correspondent David Bloom, who died in April of a blood clot in his lung after collapsing south of Baghdad, the Pentagon has told families that blood clots caused two soldiers to collapse and die. At least eight other soldiers have also collapsed and died from what the military has described as non-combat-related causes. A disturbing parallel has also surfaced: soldiers becoming ill or dying from similar ailments in the United States. In some cases, the soldiers, their families and civilian doctors blame vaccines given to them by the military, particularly the anthrax or smallpox shots... On the Administration's Failure to Provide a Realistic, Specific Plan to Bring Stability to Iraq by US Senator Ted Kennedy, Senate Floor Remarks, October 16, 2003 Nearly six months have elapsed since President Bush flew out to the aircraft carrier and declared "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq. Today, we all know all too well that the war is not over; the war goes on; the mission is not accomplished. An unnecessary war, based on unreliable and inaccurate intelligence, has not brought an end to danger. Instead, it has brought new dangers, imposed new costs, and taken more and more American lives each week. We all agree that Saddam Hussein was a murderous tyrant, and his brutal regime was an affront to basic human decency. But Iraq was not a breeding ground for terrorism. Our invasion has made it one. The trumped up reasons for going to war have collapsed. All the Administration's rationalizations as we prepared to go to war now stand revealed as "double-talk." The American people were told Saddam Hussein was building nuclear weapons. He was not. We were told he had stockpiles of other weapons of mass destruction. He did not. We were told he was involved in 9/11. He was not. We were told Iraq was attracting terrorists from Al Qaeda. It was not. We were told our soldiers would be viewed as liberators. They are not. We were told Iraq could pay for its own reconstruction. It cannot. We were told the war would make America safer. It has not. Before the war, week after week after week after week, we were told lie after lie after lie after lie... ...No foreign policy in our free society can succeed for long unless it is supported by our people. Our men and women in uniform fought bravely and brilliantly, but the President's war has been revealed as mindless, needless, senseless, and reckless. The American people know all this. Our allies know it. Our soldiers know it... THE ENTIRE ADDRESS IS AT: http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1016-15.htm "RHINO'S BLOG" is the responsibility of Gary Rhine.
