QUOTE OF THE DAY "A Criminal is a person with predatory instincts without sufficient capital to form a corporation." - - Clarence Darrow KNOW YOUR HISTORY - OCTOBER 1983 -- Lebanon: 241 U.S. Marines & sailors, part of a multinational force, killed when suicide commandos drive trucks packed with explosives into two bases where US & French "peacekeeping" troops are sleeping. Over 300 French & US military personnel die. US Marines have been there since 1958, when 5,000 were sent to as a "peace-keeping" force to "protect" the elected government from threatened overthrow. In February, President Reagan removes all Marines from Lebanon. TODAY'S FEATURED BRIEFS - Severn Cullis-Suzuki, 23 year old environmental visionary & daughter of David Suzuki - The Sky Fish Project, and the "Recognition of Responsibility" - "Evidence Of Things Unseen: The Rise of a New Movement", Tom Hayden's address to The Bioneers RHINO HERE: Last weekend's Bioneers Conference was a sold out, thousands strong gathering of committed, progressive activists & biological engineers determined to heal Mother Earth. Two of many highlights for The Rhino were Tom Hayden's plenary address entitled, "Evidence Of Things Unseen: The Rise of a New Movement" which is today's RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE... More from Tom Hayden at: http://www.tomhayden.com ... and a remarkable young woman of 23 named Severn Cullis-Suzuki, who (from her bio) ...has been active in environmental and social justice work since kindergarten. At age 9, she and some friends started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many local projects, and also in raising enough money to appear at 1992's Rio Earth Summit, with the aim of reminding the decision makers of who the conference would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12-yr-old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech to the political representatives. In 1993, Cullis-Suzuki received the UN Environment Program's Global 500 Award at a ceremony in Beijing, China. Now 23, Cullis-Suzuki continues to speak to schools and corporations, and at many conferences and international meetings. Often speaking on the necessity of defining our values, acting with the future in mind, and on individual responsibility; she is especially passionate about encouraging young people to speak out for their future. The First Nations people of the West coast have been a major influence on Severn since she was small. She has worked with and learned from the First Nations peoples of British Columbia, Southeast Asia and the Amazon. She has been honored by three British Columbian First Nations - she was adopted into the Haida Nation and given the name Killthgula Gaayaa. She has been named Mah Nulth Athluk by the Nuchaanulth people, and is also an adopted member of the Heiltsuk Nation. Severn Cullis-Suzuki's Bio: http://www.skyfishproject.org/skySevBio.html Severn is the daughter of David Suzuki, Canada's preeminent science broadcaster, geneticist, professor, public lecturer, and environmental and civil rights activist. Best known as moderator of the CBC TV show, The Nature of Things, which airs in more than 40 nations. His 1985 series, A Planet for the Taking, averaged 1.8 million viewers per episode and earned him a United Nations Environment Program Medal (1988)... Evidence Of Things Unseen: The Rise of a New Movement By Tom Hayden, AlterNet, October 21, 2003 EDITOR'S NOTE: The following piece is adapted from a speech Tom Hayden gave at the Bioneers Conference on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2003. The chairman of our Joint Chiefs of Staff, Richard Myers, has said that "Intelligence doesn't necessarily mean something is true. That's not what intelligence is." Keep that in mind as I discuss what James Baldwin called the "evidence of things unseen." A few weeks ago in Cancun, I watched at the barricades as a South Korean farmer appeared to shake his fist in militant anger at the dispossession of his people. I did not see that he was committing ritual suicide with a knife. As far as I know, neither did anyone else. Hours later, the WTO issued a press release stating its "regret" at what it called the "self-inflicted" wound that resulted in the farm leader's death. I began to wonder how many other deaths we see but do not see. Farmers in India poisoning themselves with pesticides. Farmers in America quietly committing suicide. A rise in suicides among American soldiers in Iraq. These unseen deaths should be seen as signs of the times. They are birth pangs as well. For example, in the past three weeks some 80 Bolivians have given their lives - hardly the first time in their 500-year-long struggle - but these cocoleros , these sweatshop workers, these indios, have overthrown the government over globalization issues and sent their mine-owning, American-trained president packing. The evidence of things unseen. There is rising a new movement in the world. It is bigger than the movement of the 1960s. Yet it is barely seen by the experts and analysts. They look only at the behavior of institutions and politicians, not the underlying forces that eventually burst into visibility. The first strand of this new movement is the global opposition to the war in Iraq and to an American empire...
