So many islands, so little time Living in Indonesia and learning to Weblog via Radio (along with many other very random thoughts and stories).
How many islands does Indonesia have? The answerOr, if you're on Jeopardy..."What is the number of islands in Indonesia?" That question has many answers, as most interesting questions do. According to the CIA factbook the answer is 17,000 (6,000 or so being inhabited). The Indonesian Embassy in Prague says, "The new figure for the total number of islands is 17,508 according to the Indonesian Naval Hydro-Oceanographic office. This figure is increased from the official figure so far known, that is 13,667." The INHO numbers are repeated around the web on many sites, so it is probably the authoritative number. But it ultimately depends on how you define an island. How many islands does Indonesia have? When kids (I'm assuming) ask Google this question I'm the first web site. So, I think I better answer it for them. Not now, but soon. This is the third or fourth time I've gotten a hit from the query. Rock & Roll RebelMark Joseph, author of The Rock and Roll Rebellion, runs a great website and email newsletter. His book is about the challenge of being an artist and being a Christian and NOT being a Christian Artist. In other words, the difference of being an artist and being part of an industry. The website and newsletter focus on articles on the web that touch on this issue. He deals with music, books, and movies. It's great stuff. That said, I wish Mark would redo them both in weblog format. I loved his book and his columns, so I'd like more from him than just pointers to articles. I want his thoughts on these articles and issues. Come on Mark, jump in the water is warm. Rethinking DogmaI was pointed to a very interesting interview with Dogma director Kevin Smith. This guy knows his scripture and seems to have a really sincere and pretty orthodox faith. It is hard to match this up with what I know of his films. But, as usual, I don't know much first hand. Chasing Amy, Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Mallrats, and Dogma aren't movies I'd usually go to. I did see Dogma, didn't think much of it. It was interesting, but bothered me. Maybe I'm evaluating it on a very surface level? I think I'll need to see it again. So, the big question is, "Can I find it on DVD in Indonesia?" Thanks to Mark Joseph for the pointer to the interview. Six DegreesI'm downloading the demo of Six Degrees. It sounds a lot like Enfish, but it is suppose to be cooler. We'll see. More later. (BTW, downloading 10meg files via 28.8, actually slower, dial-up lines sucks) Toshiba and WiFiInfoWorld reports Toshiba to launch a national, seamless, integrated Wi-Fi and 3G cellular network: Expected to be announced at PC Expo on June 25, Toshiba's network has few details yet available, like speed, locations, and cost. [80211b News] Very cool stuff. Kids are back homeThe kids got back from camp last night in Kaliurang, east Java. All four (from 9 - 16 years-old) had a great time. That is really amazing. Each made tons of new friends. They all went on a camp out one night and watched as Mt. Merapi erupted. They even survived the 7 hour train ride there and back! More strange Google hits from my refererI'm number six for "watching soccer in seattle," even though I'm watching from Indonesia. Someone else found me via "indonesia linux penetration," even though I didn't seem to show up on the list.
