What is Bitzi? [Scripting News]
Bitzi appears to be an open source program that lets users catalog their files, through use of metadata taging, and share that information with other users. What it doesn't let users do is trade files. So what's the point? Unless you tie this metaadata in with FTP locations of the files, why use this as opposed to having a web site with file desciptions and ratings?
This could make for an interesting form of web based Nielsen ratings. If there was ever a decent means of distributing copyrighted material, you could for example, rate the segments that make up a program, rate the commercials etc. This assumes that you can legally download the files, and transfer them between your own machines, or that fair use rules still exist.
Aside: The CBDTPA is the worst case scenario of Buggywhip makers trying to stop the Auto manufacturers. people want a faster way of getting and sharing stuff. In this case it's information, then it was livery service and transport. Rather than innovate, or try to change business models, they've decided to invest that money in buying politicians. Contrast this with They Might Be Giants who have, for years, given away songs on their Dial A Song service (718 387 6962 ) [hmmm...link seems broken]. They also have a free MP3 sign up that they use to distribute early versions of the tracks that they often end up putting on their albums. They are also doing the whole branding thing I was going on about the other day, and have been for years.
