Solar flare silences Japan's Mars probe. A solar flare knocks out communication - but officials say the spacecraft's on-board computers can be repaired in time [New Scientist]

While intellectually I know that a certain number of probes that are sent off into space are going to get conked out, why does it seem that the ones we send to Mars have a 50/50 chance of making it?

LG Philips raises LCD stakes. New 5G Plant [The Register]

This is great news on the LCD front, as this will allow for either larger LCDs, cheaper LCDs, or some combination of the two. Also, this plant will likely be used to start making LCD displays that are to be used as televisions. Very cool news.
