Darn and tarnation!! I'd have loved to join Dave and Bay Area folks for a blogger get together, but I'll just miss it by a hair. Dave hits the West Coast July 12-16, whereas I hit same (Menlo Park) July 6-12! I'll be in Las Vegas July 12-16. Don't know if any other bloggers will be at CAWorld, but let me know if you are, and maybe we can lose some collective blogging money on the tables or the one-armed bandits...

Irish bloggers meeting: Are people still interested in meeting up on Saturday, July 5th? If this only has so-so interest, we can do something late in July. Or of course, someone else can set something up! I am away in mid-July.

I also have a long interview in today's paper with Dr Chris Horn, the co-founder and former chairman of Iona Technologies, who returned to his original role as chief executive following the resignation of Barry Morris and poor results:

Right now, there's only one obvious question to ask Dr Chris Horn: "What went wrong?"

His answer, straightforward and more resolute than resigned, is equally blunt: "Where to start?"

More on data retention in Ireland: Correspondence and documentation I received under the Freedom of Information Act from the Department of Communications reveals it has some major concerns about the Department of Justice's proposed three year data retention bill. Full story here from today's Irish Times; this is an excerpt:

According to the Department's comments, the Bill "is likely to impose significant costs on operators and service providers. This is a matter of considerable concern to the Department in light of the global downturn in the information and communications technologies sector".

A three-year retention period "would impose significant initial capital expenditure costs on operators as well as ongoing expenditure related to operational requirements. This would likely be an additional deterrent to market entry by new service providers. It must also be assumed that additional costs for industry will result in increased costs for subscribers and users".
