I'm working on a essay similar to Jeremy's post Metaphors for Social Computing. I would like to identify the role of the shared thing in the norm formation in social influence networks. This could be the big gant chart that we gather around to point at to help us cognitively make sense of the challenges we face, or the client review site where we post "the latest comps" to sell our vision of the solution. What role does the "shared thing" play in making sense of the work we share that is the target of our collaboration?

Learning for yourself, or for the company?. In her introduction, Janice Reid raises an interesting point about what happens if you focus too much on learning about the company you work for. I'll let Janet's words explain.

One thing that I've learnt recently is that there's a limit to what one's learning when working with a corporate.  After a couple of years you start to capture more about the company, rather than building your own functional knowledge.  You create a personal database of information which is very valuable to your work colleagues, but worthless to you once you move on.  In hindsight I would recommend 'job hopping' in order to develop your personal knowledge of different environments, ways of doing things, attitudes etc, rather than a prolonged period at any one firm, even if you are frequently changing roles.

[Seb's Open Research] Companies are going to have to create learning environments that attract and hold key people. There are so many other options open and people will choose their best option so the importance of providing and maintaining a work environment that supports learning will be a strategic necessity.

What Dave calls the two way web seems similar to what HBS alums describe as the driving force for what they call Internet2 in this article form News.com. Of paticular interest is their claim that Internet2 or 2-Way-Web is first manifest in Research and Development functions where the Knoweledge Bazaar effects dominate the consumer producer participation in the value creation process on the internet. Under what conditions will consumers choose to particiapte in the value creation process? a notable Quote

"The power of Internet2 lies in its ability to connect networks of networks." Hmm . . . networks of networks  while the author lookes at Very High Bandwidth aka VHB applications I think web logs are just one example of this transformative wave that doesn't have to wait for VHB. The value of a network increases with the square of the number of nodes whereas in my personal experience the value of the network is only directly porpotional to the bandwidth at best.
