My conference wrapped up late afternoon on Thursday and I had just enough time to rent a bike and putter down to Venice Beach. It was a perfect afternoon - about 75 degrees and brilliant sun. The whole LA beach scene is really quite the deal and well, everything you've heard about Venice Beach turns out to be true. That place is time warped back in the mid-60's. Very summer of love. But, it was lots of fun to pedal through and view the sites. I even managed to squeeze in a few geocaches (of course!). Below are some touristy photos.
Lord of The Rings - this section of the beach is in Santa Monica and right in front of the bike rental place. It's an adult playground with rings, climbing ropes, parallel bars, etc. Totally neat. I would have loved to have tried the rings. But, I didn't want to rip my arms out of their shoulder joints. Discretion being the better part of valor and all of that.
Frank Gehry's Binocular Building in Venice. I discovered the building on my way to a geocache - it's about 1/2 mile from the beach. I had no idea it was a Frank Gehry building until this evening when I googled "binocular building" Santa Monica.

My trusty steed. Yup - it's a recumbent tricycle. I can no longer ride a regular bike because of, shall we say, issues. But recumbents are still very doable. And the bicycle rental place rented recumbent tricyles. I will say that me and my tricycle were the object of some laughter and good natured commentary. But that's o.k. We didn't let it get to us.
