What was I saying? Right, kids learn on their own, given the right framework of understanding and an active interest in the topic, best stimulated by doing.

Here is Paul Graham on what happens when kids are put in the wrong framework for learning, left to idle in a prison-like atmosphere. Here is an article by way of Arts and Letters Daily on what happens when bad administration abets bad behavior in the public schools.

Thinking back to Saturday, at the Menlo Pizza and Sub: I called Monica to let her talk with Yen, Armi, and John John. We were supposed to get in touch to meet for this weekend if it were feasible. After the call, Yen related a story she heard from the California cousins: They were taking Monica’s sister to the mall, and in San Francisco, malls are full of FIlipinos. Mayann exclaimed, “I’ve never felt so out of place in all my life!” I can see Nina in a similar situation. Can you imagine feeling so alienated from your heritage that you feel no connection at all with others? That’s what comes of living in the sticks.

The phone is still out, but at least only one in three staff members is lying about it. Matt has a phone, but he can’t stand modem service. There seems to be a high school girls’ swim team rooming on my floor, running around and giggling in their night skivvies. I tried to be good, but a man has got to have his phone service, no?

I left the office at about six today, and the last dregs of daylight were still coloring the nightening sky. Winter is passing. Pass on.
