Another book to add to the library, "Software For Your Head" by Jim and Michele McCarthy. Ron Jeffries likes it. Jim McCarthy is the author (and Microsoftie) behind the "Dynamics of Software Development", a terrific book that is emphatic in its plea for automated tests and builds -- way back in 1995, before the XP practices had been formally articulated.

ProjectWorld is coming to Toronto in April. There is a noticeable lack of support for Agile methods on the agenda. One item called "eXtreme Project Management(tm)" looks like an attempt to coopt some principles from XP. Hmmm, will have to looking that one a bit more.
That Agile methods are missing is not entirely surprising, given the heavy methodology orientation of the sponsors of the event. We're going to check out the conference anyway to get a temperature reading of the "heavy" folks.

We attended a terrific presentation at the downtown Toronto Board of Trade. The speaker was Chris Armstrong, Chief Marketing Officer of TD Canada Trust, the main person responsible for the TDCT "Marketer of Year" award from Marketing magazine.
He presented a very level headed view on the impact of the Internet on marketing:
- we are only starting to see the impacts of the Internet; it is a long term structural upheaval
- the Internet needs to be thought of as alternative distribution channel
- the Internet will coexist with existing distribution channels
- advances in marketing are almost entirely related to advances in technology; the collection of data; the analysis of data; the measurement of processes; and the distribution of data
- the biggest systems challenge facing the Financial Institutions is getting a single, complete, integrative view on the customer; in short, implementing customer-centric systems
