Adam Bosworth founder and CTO of Crossgain and Microsoft alumnus who led the early work on XML shares his thoughts on web services in his interview with Steve Gillmor of XML Magazine: "what we're really talking about is the next generation of n-tier architecture, and it turns out that the next generation of n-tier architecture needs to be one that can be distributed such that the Internet is the computer, not just the network". Bosworth provides a refreshing, realistic view of web services ("don't even call it 'Web services,' call it 'services'"). He talks about the need for loose coupling, coarse-grained communication and asynchrony among services, backing up his assertion "As the next generation of n-tier architecture, Web services will mean moving data, and not code, among various platforms". I found his discussion on the limitations of WSDL and the importance of "order in which you do things" particularly interesting. [bs]
