Ashcroft's Terrorism Policies Dismay Some Conservatives. Many who pressed President Bush to appoint John Ashcroft attorney general now say they have become troubled by his actions in the fight against terrorism. By Neil A. Lewis. [New York Times: National]

Even the most stalwart of right wing operatives are beginning to question John Ashcroft. And no wonder. How do the Bush bozos expect to win – obviously the only thing they care about – if they alienate their strongest supporters with a seemingly endless stream of lies and incompetence?

Ashcroft's Words Clash With Staff on Checks. Congressional testimony by Attorney General John Ashcroft last December that the F.B.I. could not legally use records of gun background checks to investigate terrorism suspects conflicted with a formal opinion by his own legal staff, a report issued yesterday by the General Accounting Office shows. By Fox Butterfield. [New York Times: National]

Hey, you don’t think John Ashcroft is a filthy liar who would say or do anything to advance his cave-man KKKristian dogma, do you? Turns out when Ashcroft told Congress last year that it was illegal for the FBI to use gun background check info in criminal investigations, what he really meant was, “It’s perfectly legal, but I won’t allow it because I’m a pro gun asshole more than willing to lie to get my way.”

Stalking 4-Star Barbecue in the Lone Star State. Like cowboy boots and the Alamo, barbecue lies at the very heart of the Texas psyche. By Steven Raichlen. [New York Times: Dining and Wine]

It’s always interesting to see a paper from New York City talk about Texas barbecue. This article correctly picks the top 4 barbecue places in CenTex, but are they really the best? All 4 of ‘em are good, but my pick for the best barbecue in Central Texas, and, therefore, the rest of the planet, is the City Meat Market in Giddings.

If you go, get there early. Unlike the Big 4, this is not a tourist joint. It’s a true small town ‘cue run by a guy who cooks what he cooks and that’s it. He usually runs out of everything by early afternoon, but the best stuff goes even quicker.

S.E.C. Chief Seeks Promotion; Chances Look Dim. Harvey L. Pitt, who barely goes a week without new calls for him to step down as chairman of the S.E.C., is asking Congress for a raise and more respect. By Stephen Labaton. [New York Times: Politics]

Here’s another one for the “You’ve Got To Be Kidding” file. Hardly a day goes by that someone from either side of the aisle doesn’t call for this idiot’s resignation, and he thinks those same people are going to give him a promotion and raise? Welcome to Bushworld, where nothing is what it seems.

Nevada to vote on marijuana [USA Today : Front Page]

Last year a single joint was a felony in Nevada. Is it possible that next year up to 3 ounces could be legal? A ballot initiative just certified in Nevada is the first to call for the outright legalization of pot in the US.

Thompson booed at conference [USA Today : Front Page]

Lies, more lies and damned lies. Who the fuck do these lying pricks think they’re talking to?

Tommy Thompson was roundly – and deservedly - booed yesterday at an international conference on AIDS when he tried to portray Bush – take a potty trip now if you have a weak bladder ‘cause there ain’t gonna be a dry seat in the house after this one – as THE number one leader in the battle against AIDS. This just after Bush has severely cut AIDS funding in the US and withdrawn support from UN AIDS and family planning initiatives.

Humanity's "massive overdraft" with Earth [New Scientist]

We’re Number 2!

The good news is the US is only number 2 in global environmental irresponsibility. The bad news is number 1 is a tiny oil rich Arab state. Find out why, at our current gluttonous rate of consumption, we’ll need 2 planet Earths to sustain us in less than 50 years.

Bush to Seek Harsher Penalties for Corporate Fraud. President Bush called today for tougher penalties for corporate criminals and a crackdown on boardroom scandals. By Kenneth N. Gilpin. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]

Here’s one for the “You’ve Got To Be Kidding” file. Does anyone, and by that I mean any living, breathing, sentient creature with a triple digit IQ, believe anything this lying idiot has to say about corporate malfeasance? This is much like Enron calling for reform of energy markets or Andersson calling for more checks on accountants.
