The Lesser Deal

Day 1 at the meeting at the Beach House...

With our backs to the patio door and the view of the ocean just outside, we thought we got the lesser deal. Whereas the others could look out at blue-green water with sun glinting off the waves, we could only see the reflection of it in our laptop screens.

Still, we got to sit next to the open patio door, and the sound of the sea shore wrapped around us, and the sea breeze blew against out backs. And there was the Wren that alighted on the deck railing and started to sing in the way that only a Wren can.

And then one of us (it was not I) stood and went to the door and slid it shut. The room was still. The Wren was gone.

"I couldn't hear a thing!" he said.

So for the rest of the day, I guess I really did get the lesser deal.

The Color of the Sea

I went out on the beach and walked to the north as the tide was coming in after being so far out. I called you on my phone and held it out so you could hear the waves rolling on the sand and the wind blowing and the birds flying by.

I tried to tell you about the the water, struggling to find words for that light -- that aquamarine, turquoise blue, pastel sea green that shines thru the waves as they curl over and fall foamy white against the strand.

But you couldn't hear it. And I never found the words. And I wish you could have been there to hear and see the waves and wind and birds and sun and sand and sky and the color of the sea.
