Police shoot running dog Dog owner Shirley Morris' said the family usually boards their dog at a local vet when they leave on a trip. But this trip was a one night stay in St. Louis so her family left the dog in the fenced back yard, without food or water. When temperatures soared to over 100 degrees, the dog jumped the fence to look for water.  The dog never bit anyone, and no complaints were ever filed about the dog. On return from her trip, Morris called the police, who came to her house and said, "we killed your dog."  Poor dog,  guilty of human stupidity...

Lawyer: Dogs have self awareness and deserve legal rights  Washington Post, DC. It's a controversial notion but one taken seriously - that what we know about the intentional antics of dogs is just an extension of their self awareness. "If some species of "nonhuman animals" can be shown to be smarter, more aware, more humanlike than previously recognized, they arguably deserve legal rights, according to Steven Wise, animal rights lawyer"...

"Certain species are capable of complex emotions, can communicate using language, and have a sense of self," says Wise, "all characteristics that once defined humanity...Wise makes similar cases for eight other species who meet the standards of consciousness, some sense of self-awareness and ability to act intentionally: gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, African gray parrots, African elephants, dogs and honeybees."

What Wise is arguing for is the right not to be treated as a 'thing' but as a conscious being with the right to freedom from neglect and torture and what has been termed "sanctioned torture," where captive dogs are used for scientific experiments  where abuse takes place...
