On road kill and flattened pets Another reason to keep your dog on a leash...

"Bob Wood's job really stinks, but he's not complaining. The man in charge of clearing dead animals from St. Paul's streets claims to have a strong stomach, and a knack for scraping up flattened cats, dogs and skunks without flinching. Wild animals, strays, pets -- they're the fallen fauna of St. Paul, succumbing to fast cars on a regular basis. One by one, they end up in back of Wood's truck. The toughest part of his job isn't animal odors, he said, but dealing with despondent pet owners whose dogs and cats frequently end up as roadkill near their homes. . Muting that barking dog Some companies market ultrasound generator collars as dog silencers. The collar will emit a sound, audible only to  the dog wearing the collar, which is so unpleasant that the dog will stop barking, after learning his bark activates the sound.

While such a collar may work and work well, it may not be the best solution for a barking dog. Dogs will bark at intruders (not a bad thing); out of boredom (find the dog something to do) or to get the owner's attention. Excessive dog barking can be retrained.
