Dangers around the house are legion for pets Onions and chocolate are deadly to dogs, and dogs will find a way to eat both, if you don't have such foods locked safely away... [Hoosier Times] (I recommend 277 Secrets Your Dog Wants You to Know, by Paulette Cooper and Paul Nobe, ISBN 1580080146, as an invaluable resource for dog lovers who want to protect their dogs from accidental injury. There's also a 277 Secrets Your Cat Wants You to Know.)
Animal rights groups decry Spain's hanging of the dogs... Help prevent more deaths... This must be stopped now... The most gentle and noble of dogs, the greyhound, suffers horrendously in Spain. After racing season ends, dogs are hung from trees.. a slow agonizing death...[Ananova]
Joe Jenett of cool stop is doing a pet poll for his friend Lloyd. Joe is both a friend of animals and geeks (nice combination). Pass it along.

woah, Dave Barry and Dog News use the same theme on blogspot.com. Jenny bemoans that Dave has no RSS feed; he can get one... it's simple to get an automagically generated feed on blogspot: just sign up at: syndic8.com and paste in a couple of identifiers into the them, so it can get 'scraped.' Syndic8 is a treasure trove of scraped feeds. [dave's blog found via The Shifted Librarian's rss feed.]

Our blogspot site is a shambles... due to the ever recurring incompatibility of blogger with the meta weblog api in Radio (try to say that three times fast). What I mean is that sometimes it won't post (this site's posts are supposed to stream to blogger, but it's always broken) OR even worse, the same post keeps reposting at blogspot, over and over and over... I've fixed it; then it breaks; fix... break... fix... break... I get bummed out when I visit our blogspot site... a myriad of problems there and I can't get answers to fix them. BUT, it is free and it got me started. Like many others, I fled blogspot for Radioland and I've never looked back... well, occasionally, I go over there to try to fix it... sigh... Dog News at Radioland is in much better shape...
Cooking for Fido or Fluffy? be careful... R.I. Did you know that dogs and cats cannot digest dairy products because their digestive systems lack the enzymes to process lactose? I didn't ...  'and soy flour can have a similar effect.' (flatulence and indigestion)
'Several foodstuffs should never be given to dogs or cats. In addition to chocolate, which can cause erratic heartbeats, seizures and death, Michel mentioned onions and onion-derived products (such as onion powder, onion salt, onion soup mix and onion flavorings), as well as raisins, grapes and macadamia nuts...'
In addition, 'Veterinary journals recently reported several cases of kidney failure in dogs that ate grapes or raisins in amounts ranging from 9 ounces to 2 pounds...' Macadamia nuts? forget about it... even a few can cause convulsions in a dog...  [Providence Knight Rider News]
Providing for your four-legged heirs: angels to the rescue... CO '...only about 30 percent of Americans have a formal will, and only half of those are up to date. Of those pet owners who do have a current will, between 12 percent and 27 percent have provided for their animals in their wills...' If you want to take care of your pets after your death, you can ensure they get a good life by planning for it... The Ark Angels recommends a pet emergency card... [Rocky Mountain News]
Child, dead cats and dogs removed from home CO 'Neighbors had noticed a foul smell coming from a southwest Denver home for years, but even they were surprised Sunday when police found as many as 40 animals - many of them dead and decaying - among the waist-deep debris inside the house...' Dog and cat kennels were stacked five deep: most contained decaying animals. Police also removed a malnourished 13-year-old girl. Her legal guardian is not under arrest nor charged with any crime... [Denver Post] Another article infers the legal guardian was a registered nurse... (how did neighbors not know of the girl?.. )

500 dogs rescued from Oregon home 'Nearly 500 dogs -- sick and malnourished -- were removed Thursday night from a rural home near the ranching town of Harper in southeastern Oregon... it was just horrible; the stench alone was unbelievable..' Despite their emaciation and filthy conditions, some of the dogs would make good pets, according to rescuers. 'Barbara Erickson was taken into custody Friday in Ontario, OR, while driving a van with 30 dogs and an animal corpse inside...' [Oregonian] (She was also involved in a 1996 Idaho case.)

Related: Charleston to raze condemned pet home, Dog rescuer kept 86 pit bulls crated in 100 degree heat. (The worst cases of abuse sometimes come from well-meaning 'collectors' of animals. Prison terms, publicity and fines do not reform animal collectors, who will move to another state, if necessary, to continue collecting... )

Iditarod fans shell out $$$ for a chance to ride in dog sled race AK On Friday, The 31st 2003 Iditarod Sled Dog Race Auction drew bidders from all over the United States, Alaska and Canada for a chance to ride the first 11 miles of the race and brought in a grand total of $103, 537.  Because only 63 sled rides were available, one bid rose as high as $7,500...
