Man Says Gators Should Live In Apartment, Mother's House CT Apparently police and neighbors weren't reassured by John Boyko's claim that 'his pets are safer than Rottweiler or pit bull dogs.' After his landlord complained, police confiscated all three pet alligators and placed them  with the local zoo. "A dog bites you and backs off. An alligator bites you to eat you..." [nbc30.com] (Dogs don't eat alligators while alligators will eat dogs and other animals, if given the chance.... )

Gentle leader dog collar gently leads your dog NY The gentle leader, a dog collar for walking your dog, is not a muzzle, even though it looks like one to those who aren't familiar with it. Designed for comfort and for gentleness, it works with almost any dog...

"It puts pressure on the back of the dog's neck when the dog pulls forward.. That pressure calms the dog by touching off the kind of neurochemical response that makes a puppy relax when its mother picks it up by the scruff of the neck. Also, it applies pressure on the dog's nose, the kind of pressure a dominant wolf or dog conveys when it takes a troublesome youngster's muzzle in its mouth without biting down. This pressure tells the dog to relax and defer to the handler..." [NY Times]

The gentle leader head collar won't replace training your dog to heel, but it will save your dog from wrenching his neck and you from dislocating your shoulders. We've used virtually every type of dog collar and this one is truly gentle. I lost our companion training collar, custom made by Miriam Fields; her design resembles a horse's halter and it was quite comfortable for our dog.

Veterinarians versus SARS dispute riles company  On April 10, Forbes magazine published an article describing Synbiotics Corporation as a company involved in the development of animal coronavirus vaccines. The article further suggested a link may exist between the SARS virus (a new and deadly virus which first appeared in China)  and such vaccines. Synbiotics Corporation responded with press releases refuting the allegation and further announced it is in negotiations with one of its suppliers over an alleged breach of contract:

"While Synbiotics has previously marketed animal vaccines, it has never developed or marketed an animal coronavirus vaccine, nor does Synbiotics currently have any plans to develop such a vaccine in the future... Synbiotics Corporation develops, manufactures and markets veterinary diagnostics, instrumentation and related products for the companion animal, large animal and poultry markets worldwide. City considers pet chaining law after rescue of starved dog AL When Fairhope animal control officers rescued Bones, the dog, from a heavy short chain tied to a tree, he resembled a bag of bones. Now the city is considering a total ban on tethering dogs on chains. Only six other cities nationwide have enacted such an ordinance.

'Every time I see a dog chained up, normally they're not properly being taken care of. The dogs seem aggressive and real down and out..." [WPMI]

Carnival Cruise Lines to Provide Canine Screening  Dogs track people and cargo, Internet tracks the dogs... NY 'American Detection Technologies, Inc. (AMDETECH), a homeland security company and national leader in contraband detection services using highly-trained canine teams, has contracted with Carnival Cruise Lines to provide canine screening.' All dogs selected must meet the U.S. Department of the Treasury "Odor Recognition Proficiency Standard" and Department of Defense standards. Wild dogs of India near extinction India 'Wild dog species, the 'Cuon Alpinus', the only pack-hunting canine in India and the third major carnivore after tiger and leopard, is facing serious threats of extinction in the Simlipal Biosphere Reserve.' Domesticated dogs and an ever decreasing habitat are blamed for much of the wild dog's demise... [Orissa.Net NBC]

New medicines for the forgetful dog... NY Not unlike Alzheimer's, canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome can rob a dog of enjoying its life. Today's vet may prescribe medicine and even special dog food, (Hills Pet Nutrition's  prescription-only "brain diet"), to treat the syndrome. Because other diseases, such as tumors or diabetes, may result in similar symptoms, veterinarians recommend thorough physicals for such pets.

"Veterinarians hear the same vague complaints: The dog's not as eager to play anymore, or he doesn't seem to recognize his owners, or he wanders whenever he's let into the yard. Owners usually don't consult their vet until the dog drives them crazy, soiling the house or making noise all night..." [Post-Standard]
